About Us

HISTORY OF VOLU

VOLU was founded in 1956 by a resident tutor called Gordon GREEN at Mfantsipim College in Cape Coast. It was registered in 1956 as the Voluntary Workcamps Association of Gold Coast. When Ghana attained its independence from British colonial rule, the founder adopted the name ‘Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana’, in 1957.
Much of VOLUs’ early work in High Schools focussed on informing, encouraging and inspiring young people to engage in voluntary work – helping them to expand horizons, break down barriers, and develop a sense of belonging in the community, in addition to bringing benefits to personal well-being and employment prospects.
Over the years, VOLU, through its membership and partners (both local and international) have provided continuing voluntary service, and inculcated the spirit of voluntarism into both adults and the youth through workcamps, leadership training, workshops, sensitisation campaigns, conferences etc. Parallel to these, VOLU also undertakes international voluntary service exchange programmes with our counterparts overseas, an intercultural experience, to improve international understanding and promote world peace.
However, since the early 2000, VOLU has been facing management challenges and has therefore lost a bit of its organisational dynamism and efficiency. It is now incumbent on us to chart a new organisational direction by posing certain basic fundamental questions using SWOT analysis, and to devise progressive changes of policies, programmes and projects to move the organisation forward.
Whilst funding is always a challenge, VOLU has managed to maintain a solid base of committed members and immobile assets which have provided sufficient financial resources to help keep it from organisational “bankruptcy”. These physical resources form the bedrock of this strategic plan seeking to revive and sustain VOLUs’ programmes and activities.
